In anticipation of getting into our own house I've been checking out kitchen appliances. In the house right now is a Magic Chef oven and a similarly low end dishwasher. Unacceptable. I cannot get up each morning to be greeted by the suspiciously perky and evidently "magical" chef stamped on the range's console. After some thought and debate, Margaret and I have opted to go for higher quality consumer appliances, namely KitchenAid. We picked KitchenAid becuase it appears to be an excellent balance between cost and quality, and so that we could get appliances with similar appearance to give the kitchen a custom look. We've chosen a slide-in gas range, cabinet depth fridge, and sleek dishwasher. The prices are a bit steep, but the kitchen will look like a professional, custom kitchen and will perform like a dream. I so look forward to cooking in the new house. Look for your personal invitations to sample my wares, coming your way in late 2007!

I can understand wanting to have everything match, but you might want to reconsider the gas range from KitchenAid -- in Consumer Report's reliability ratings for gas ranges, they came in second worst behind Viking, with 20% of the new ranges purchased in the last 5 years having required a repair or having a serious unrepaired defect -- compared to 7-10% for the best 3, Hotpoint, GE, and Frigidaire. Even if you still want the KitchenAid, you might want to think about an extended warranty.

I'll probably stick with KitchenAid. I looked at the products from the other manufacturers and wasn't satisfied with the apparent quality, especially on the range. Most of the other ranges had plastic trim that looked cheap and based on the reviews that I've read it also has a tendency to melt when running the cleaning cycle. The KitchenAid had all stainless trim and felt quite solid. One problem with reports on defects is that they don't take into account what the person buying the product was expecting. MINI has a very low customer satisfaction rating from CR becuase of how many go back for repairs. Everyone I've talked to that owns a MINI loves it and is completely satisfied, but they'll take it into the shop for minor problems. This is partly due a good warranty and partly due to the expectations of the buyer. I expect that the KitchenAid and the Viking ranges are rated poorly for similar reasons, but will still probably get an extended warranty.
