NASA perhaps embellishing the truth a bit

An AP report of a new study published in Nature indicates that it is likely Mars wasn't once a source of water, despite NASA's proclamation in 2004 after the Opportunity probe.

It's possible that NASA's staff scientists, looking for anything to renew general public interest in space exploration, did not as rigorously analyze the data as perhaps they should have.
